Family Fun: The Hiking Edition

Friday we joined up with 3 lovely high school classmates that I haven’t seen since high school. We met at the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail and walked a beautiful paved uphill route. I am not sure exactly how long it was, but it was a good workout and I am quite thrilled the boys were able to make it without any major complaints. We stopped along the way to sip our water and catch our breath and it was a great activity.

When we got to the lookout spot there was a class up there…. One of the girls in our group knew one of the teachers and I knew one of the students from church and the other teacher is a friend of a friend of ours so i thought it was funny :) also it was very convenient because they snapped this shot of all of us. Jordan did not want to be in this picture. I will remember to wear a hat the next time! My friends Leigh, Marna, Kau’i, Troy, Jalen and Marna’s little cutie!

looking down from the lookout, isn’t it beautiful?! I love that aqua color in the tidepools and the shallow areas.

Eye Candy Overlays: Merry and Merrier

I recently received the two latest kits from Jess at vol.25 Eye Candy Overlays and she’s gearing up for the Holiday season! I created one layout for each new kit.

Thurston Lava Tube

journaling: one of the best parts about staying inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at Kilauea Military Camp is getting a jump start on the day. We were mostly alone while we walked around the Thurston Lava Tube. It was quiet and beautiful. We were able to catch this shot with our timer on the camera.

journaling: jalen’s tenth birthday was celebrated with dad’s homecoming. we bought lei, hung signs and went down to the pier. we also went out to dinner at island burger and came home to open presents. jalen got a microscope, slides, legos and games.

Downtown Honolulu… :)

The font from the grocery pictures is called smiley monster. I downloaded it somewhere, but not sure where?! Okay, so I just googled it and it seems that the place I downloaded it from is now gone. Sorry..

Last night was our monthly crop night at church.It’s always fun to see the ladies and chit chat while our hands are busy. I ended up making a few cards.

First I’ll recap the past few Pictures of the Day.
4.16: Jordan is drawing on his magna doodle. He says, “Mom, I make a human!” He is so funny!

This morning Jalen woke me up saying, come on Mom, it’s 5:59! Let’s go downstairs! Okay son. So after we got some biscuits and eggs in our bellies for breakfast (and coffee), we decided to head down to Chinatown/Downtown for a Photo Field trip. Be warned there are a lot of pictures coming. and If you’re on dial up, I’ll apologize in advance. We had a great time walking around this morning. We saw a lot of beautiful old buildings (I so love old buildings) and lots of flavor as I like to call it.
4.19: Jalen and Jordan have really been into the superhero thing these days. When we were downtown, he said, Look Mom, an Alley! I say Okay, let me get a shot of you… when we came home, I said, look jalen.. and he runs down the hallway, Picture of the day, Picture of the Day! funny boy!

SO here are some shots down in Chinatown…. I am wondering if all Chinese shops (like in China) look like this.

Oahu Market. This picture just reminds me of all old time movies in Hawaii…

I love these mail slots in all these old buildings downtown…

I love all the architectural details of these old buildings, they just ooze charm, don’t you think?

Jalen was my somewhat uninterested model. I’ll need to find another one to drag around.

this was in front of Kumu Kahua Theater. I told Jalen it looked like a cannon to me.

a beautiful Hapu’u Tree Fern in Downtown.

This is Aloha Tower, right across Down town Honolulu:

we rode in this tiny, old elevator to the 10th floor to the observation decks.

this is a view looking towards ewa. Do you see the big pink building? That’s Tripler Hospital…The close up waterfront is where the Super Ferry Docks.

this is looking towards Diamond Head and Waikiki.

Looking out towards the Ocean. this is sand island. where all of our goods come in Matson Containers. If you move to Hawaii, this is where your car gets shipped. this is also where so many other goods come in too…

this is between the maritime center and aloha tower. a little area where you can buy handfuls of fish food for .25 and feed the fish. or if you are like us and you have some sweet bread from china town, you can throw that out there too.

this is a cannon in front of the maritime museum. pretty cool, huh?

OKAY, so if you made it this far, bravo! I really need to get to finishing dinner now. I hope you enjoyed our trip around downtown/chinatown. :) I was inspired to take in some local beauty by my friend Noel Culbertson… they did the tulip festival and a while back they did antique stores… and by Candice Stringham who just moved to New York and is capturing some beautiful urban shots. I am constantly being asked where to shop scrap in Hawaii. and I love to share my favorite places…. :)

Makapu’u Lighthouse, Sandy’s, Cinamons…

I have taken lots and lots of pictures of this lighthouse from Sea Life Park, and from the Makapuu Lookout, but never from so close. The “hike” was scheduled for 9 am, so we dropped Jordan off at Momma Deborah’s house at 8 am and made our way to the trail parking lot. We were there at 8:40 and had some time to sit and chat, it was so nice. I also set the camera on the dashboard and used the remote to get a shot of us together! Once all of Troy’s coworkers showed up we made our way up the path. Now although I have previously sold this as a hike, i will have to tell you after doing it, it really was only a walk on a paved walkway. just my kind of walk if you ask me. there were guard rails in the areas where there needed to be guard rails, and I enjoyed a good workout. Troy carried the camera backpack, and I carried the camera. We were allowed to go right up next to the lighthouse, it was super super cool.

this is my picture of the day. hard choice, there were so many that I liked:

we also made a little drive down the road to the Halona Blow hole and Sandy’s. It was an overcast but beautiful day.

after all of the excitement… we went to the best breakfast place on the island. It’s called Cinamon’s, in Kailua. My High School Classmate’s family owns the restaurant and they make the best eggs benedict, home fries, and guava chiffon pancakes ever. and the coffee is good too! and lots of seating, friendly staff… better than boots and kimos.

OH! and on a scrapbooking note, I was mentioned on Erin Lincoln’s blog for the CK weekly recap. She liked the paint pallette! YAY! I always love reading erin’s blog, but it’s just frosting (and a scoop of ice cream) when I get mentioned. :)

crouching lion, north shore oahu

So we drove around the island again… this time I made the announcement that we would be stopping at Crouching Lion so I could photograph the rocks and also at the polynesian cultural center… It was a great day, I got to retake some of the pictures that I lost in the computer crash.

also I learned how to do the vignette thing for my pictures. love candace stringham.

We took a circle island drive today… Jalen got out of school at 12:15 and we picked up some drive through from Jack in the Box and headed to the North Shore. We stopped at this bridge, one of my favorites so I could take some pictures… we stopped at beach park so Jalen could use the bathroom and we took some more pictures. Troy took the shot of me from the unflattering rear … but it was sweet. Our next stop was waimea bay, calm and beautiful… then Chinaman’s hat in Kualoa, the Heeia Kea Pier to see if we’d find uncle Bryan. NO such luck with him, but we did see Uncle Raymond down there. It was a nice trip this afternoon. 3.5 hours and 65 miles…. next trip we’ll go east to Sandy’s and Makapu’u to see if we can see any whales.
