Today’s prompt is about what takes your breath away. Of course my family makes me happy, but so many other things make me happy too. Blue skies, white clouds, clouds colored by the sun, the sun, flowers, lighthouses, old buildings, wood fences, textures like canvas and burlap and lace and yarn, glitter, washi tape, rainbows and I could go on and on and on. Do you know what else makes me happy? This tower on Ford Island.  They rebuilt or refurbished or whatever, they fixed it up, good as new. isn’t it pretty? and if you look up on the right side, you can see the moon too. :)

you know I took more shots. one that included my shadow. and one from the other side of the tower with the sun peeking around. and the bottom shot is just the sun in the sky. no power lines, no buildings in the way. just happy sun. :)

we also saw a shave ice machine and tray, a miniature plantation store, type for a japanese newspaper, a mochi pounding bowl, a pocket watch, a notary seal and whip, and a kendo mask. Outside the Science Center where Jordan sat on a nene goose, inside with Jalen in front of the silver discs. the planetarium, oh yeah and the death star, hee hee. science on a sphere. click any of these photos for a larger view.

I have been chatting and emailing Rene from Australia for a few years now.  We have so many things in common.  We were glad to meet up face to face when her family came for a visit. The boys hit it off and we enjoyed our time together. We took our aussie friends to the aussie themed restaurant, outback steakhouse. We have put a few miles on the trail a bike, some with me pulling and some with Troy pulling.  On the time when Troy pulled, I noticed that Jordan’s feet would slip off the pedals sometimes and reminded him to put his toes, not his heels on the pedals.  He also has a habit of trying to lean to see around the front cyclist, and I also reminded him not to do that.  about a week ago we were all riding down a bike path near our home and Jordan took a tumble off the trail a bike.  I was pulling him and when I felt the bump and stopped.  I looked back and about 10 feet back Jordan was sitting on the path crying.  We checked him out and he could move and wasn’t bleeding much so we rinsed his abrasions with the water we had and made our way home.  It was about a mile from home so we had to stop a few times on the way as he wanted us to keep pouring water on his scrapes.  Once we got home, I gave him some tylenol and ice packs for his injuries.  He had a scrape on his knee, elbow, shoulder,  and rib cage, all on the left side.  As we sat at home for a few minutes Jordan started shivering and I thought though it might be the ice, he also might be going into shock.  We put a jacket on him and loaded up into the van for another trip to the ER.  I must say this for Tripler, they handled him relatively quickly and gave him an all clear. (thanks GOD!) We all wear helmets, everytime.  I urge you to do the same.

My Mom

My mom had a colonoscopy that detected a mass near her appendix and her doctor scheduled her for surgery to remove her appendix and 30% of her colon.  The surgery was on Thursday and she’s going home today.  Thankfully the hospital is minutes from my home and we were able to visit quite often and also thankfully, the staff did not enforce the 14+ age requirement for visitors so the boys were able to visit as well.  We are praying for an all clear on the pathology report.

Memorial Day Weekend

• We were lucky enough to enjoy a 4 day weekend with Troy for Memorial Day.
• Thursday after visiting my mom we headed down to Dole Cannery Theater to watch Kung Fu Panda 2.  It was a cute and funny movie and not a single too loud comment from Jordan, thankfully.
• Saturday we did some building/tinkering with some drawers we picked up at Re-Use Hawaii. Troy cleaned up the back yard and we gave away our plastic picnic table and sand/water table.  Yay for recycling!
• We went to Lowe’s to pick up some paint. while waiting for the paint to be mixed we saw some kids doing gymnastics on the cart. parents completely oblivious. :(
• We were driving down Ala Moana Blvd and the ambient temp gauge started going crazy in the van and the a/c started blowing hot air at the same time. unless of course it was 118* outside!  I was so bummed and freaked out about a return trip to the dealership.  GOOD NEWS: when we got home, troy took a look and found a big plastic bag that had blown up under our car that was right on the sensor and what ever it was doing, it stopped and everything works fine. YAY for Troy! :)
• we ate out a lot. zippy’s, outback, bubba gumps, chili’s, slush floats from Rainbow Drive In after the aquarium.
• I picked some of my sugar snap peas and ate them. so HAPPY! i want more.
• We took a trip up to Punchbowl (National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific) to take flowers to my dad’s grave on Monday.
• We also took a trip to the Waikiki Aquarium by Jordan’s request.
• Almost every morning around 6:30am Jordan makes his way to my room and crawls in the bed, he is a bed hog.
• We were on our way to lunch at Ala Moana Shopping Center and saw a lady on a moped veer into traffic (thankfully the truck stopped) but as she tried to move back out of the way, she fell over. Troy jumped out of the van to help her up and over to the sidewalk and I pulled the van over to the side.  Another person stopped who happened to be an ER nurse.  He helped assess the lady while someone else called 911.  The police and ambulance showed up and then we were able to leave her in their care.

I used my silhouette to cut these leaves out of plain white cardstock.

I mixed up some paint and Jordan worked his art.

I added a little spritz of New Glimmer Mist too. so pretty!

please do excuse the blurry photos, I just had to share them anyway ;)  I wanted to glue these leaves to a few sticks and use them for decor but you know what? we have yard service and there are like no bare branches anywhere.  but anyway, we had our fun!

The boys are doing pretty well with their homeschooling and I am very proud of their efforts.  Jordan is learning to count by 5s so he can count pennies and nickels.  It was a tough concept for him 3 days ago, and today, voila, he gets it. I am thrilled!  He is a good reader and we are working on phonics so he can write as well as he can read.  He writes in a daily journal that looks like a composition book.  The top half is blank for drawing a picture and the bottom half has lines for the story.  We write in it every week day and I am loving capturing his ideas.

Jalen has now completed his fraction workbooks and can add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and simplify them.  I am so proud of him.  He has just started the teaching textbook Math program at the 7th grade level.  What can I say, we love math in our family :)  He is working through his Latin and spelling, writing to pen pals and we have just started on History.  He also loves reading too.  We have a few science projects on the horizon and he also loves his microscope.

We have also been playing on the driveway quite a bit.  Jordan likes to ride his bike out there and Troy has drawn a race track with sidewalk chalk to add to his fun.  We are working on teaching both boys to skate, but it’s difficult without a rollerskating rink.  We also have been playing a game similar to 4square with a big red ball. fun times I tell you ;)

We have also been spending time at our community pool.  Jordan is comfortable swimming with his life vest on and knows how to calm himself and float on his back if he gets tired or splashed in the face.  Jalen is still a sloppy swimmer but can swim across the pool.  I am trying to teach him how to relax and swim easily with confidence, not so frantic and splashy ;)

I signed up for twitter messages to let me know when the international space station would be flying over, I caught this long exposure shot as it passed over this weekend.  It’s so cool to see!

We also started watching that show called Life on Discovery Channel HD? So awesome!  Jordan almost always roots for the prey, so he’s a little sad if they get eaten, but we’re all enthralled by this series.

I’ve been chatting for the past 6 years with some ladies I met online through iVillage Pregnancy/Parenting boards and last week I got to meet one of the ladies IRL.  Kelli was so sweet and gorgeous, of course.  The boys were both smitten, and I had to giggle at Jordan talking her ear off.  Please excuse the fact that I look like a giant next to her ;)

Troy’s mom is coming to visit tomorrow night and staying for about 2 weeks, so we’re looking forward to that! :)

We’re also having our house tented for termites this week and not looking forward to that. :(

Google navigation got us there and the man at the gate said, “drive up this dirt road and park in the back…”  There was free admission and free parking and free dirt, dirt and more dirt.  What is it about boys and dragging their feet through the dirt?  I’ll never understand.  We paid $6 a person to enjoy the corn maze and mini golf, because really, what says pumpkin patch and halloween like mini golf, right?!  The boys loved it.

Jordan scared the you know what out of me on this shot:

that ball came flying right to me. okay so it was about 6″ to the left, but still. I was imagining all those america’s funniest home videos moments when the camera catches the ball and then static and lines.

Honestly, we bought our pumpkins at Sam’s Club about a week ago because they were looking pretty good and we didn’t want to get to the pumpkin patch and be left with small or moldy pumpkins.  So we didn’t even buy any pumpkins here.   The Corn Maze was a big hit, even though Jordan doesn’t look happy, they all enjoyed it.  I have to say I was telling the boys to stay close because seriously, one of my biggest fears is losing a kid and what place more likely to lose a kid than in  a corn maze?!

the $6 we paid also included the hay ride that neither boy wanted to do… so we just headed out. it looked like fun though.

I don’t want to get the guy in trouble, but he’s totally checking out his twitter feed while driving all those people. or was it facebook? anyway.

We brought our wagon and since we didn’t even buy any pumpkins, Jordan got a free ride back to the car. it was better than following his dirt cloud.

We returned to our seats to watch the show because although we were in a box seat (a bank of 12 seats) there were other people crashing our area and pushing up to the front rail (which really riled up the passive aggressive in me…)  We watched the demos by the coast guard…

and the Red Bull crazy parachute team!

and we watched the Marines put on a demo:

we were also pretty impressed with the Air Force’s F22 Raptor

and then finally, the act we had been waiting all day for. the Blue Angels!

We left after the Blue Angels show, got on one of the first shuttle buses heading back to our parking area and I KID YOU NOT… it took an hour and a half to get a few miles across the base to get to our van.  Then it took another half an hour to get a few miles off the base. BUT, it was all worth it.  It was a beautiful family day and I’m thankful to KHON2 and MCCS for our prize pack!
