What is not to love about an air cannon that launches golf balls across a field to a stack of pumpkins?!  Troy and Jordan actually hit a pumpkin and I overheard the hayride driver say only 8 pumpkins had been hit so far.  Jordan even hit the hay right between two pumpkins, it was quite exciting.  Also the science nerd in me really wanted to know how it worked and how it was put together. :)

We received Jalen’s Halloween costume in the mail this week. He’s going to be Green Lantern and the costume is super cute. It’s a little big, but I’m sure we can make it work. He says he’s not trick or treating, he wants to give out candy at the house. We also got Troy’s Top Hat in the mail, it’s cute too. I’ve been sewing a little at a time. I got all our pattern pieces cut out and started by sewing my dress first. I have been really precise with the patter cutting, pinning and sewing for this dress and I’m really excited to see how it fits. I was worried the top might not fit quite right and had to seam rip a few times but I think it’s on the right track now.

I bought a few black plastic pumpkins and black rats at Target last month and I am using them for Halloween decor. I took the rats and used a small sharp scissors to cut out the little red bubbles they had for eyes and stuck on some clear gradient adhesive gems. I also glittered my pumpkins with glue and black glitter. I had a little craftmergency when I used up a whole tube of doodlebug glitter on one pumpkin. Thankfully I avoided a craftastrophe by picking up a big jar of black glitter from Martha Stewart. ;)

Last Sunday we took a trip down to Pearl Ridge after church for lunch at CPK and then around the mall to check out their “Can Struction” event. We rode on the sky tram, visited the photo booth.

This weekend we are picking up the disc of photos from our shoot with the ever fabulous Marina Miller, I’m so stoked! I am going to get some cardmaking done on this world cardmaking day and then back to sewing. We are looking at just over a week until Troy’s expected return home and we are super stoked about that.

superheroes…. but whatever the case, I always like to go with a theme. Jordan decided he wanted to be Captain America and Jalen, who insists he doesn’t want to trick or treat didn’t want to dress up, was thinking about thor because really, that hammer (however you pronounce the name) is pretty cool. I was all for it. I thought Troy could be Iron Man or Tony Stark (hello avengers) and I could be pepper or something like that…. but to my surprise Troy opted for Mr. Darcy. :) and I am going to be Elizabeth Bennett. Sadly this costume was a little out of our price range…

We visited Party City near our home and circled that ridiculous parking lot twice before opting to drive to the farther party city store out at Waikele. We easily found a costume for Jordan:

We searched and picked up a helmet and hammer for Thor but unfortunately the only Thor costumes they had were mens’ size XL or Plus. sadly, tooo big for Jalen. I declared, we’ll just order it online! and when we got home I was further saddened to discover that THOR costumes were just not available in Jalen’s size. so we opted for Green Lantern. oh the disgrace, he’s not an avenger. :( but I’m sure it’ll still be awesome.

We went yesterday to the fabric store so I could pick up some patterns and fabric for Mr. Darcy. I picked the patterns that were closest to what I was looking for and I’m hoping for the best out of this very ambitious project. Today I’m prewashing the linen and cottons and tonight I’m sure I’ll be ironing 8 yards of each. ha. Wish me luck!

We also picked up some products for Halloween decor projects I’ll be sharing as I finish them.

This year Troy carved the pumpkins as I was busy with projects, I only got to snap a few pics of the process and then return to my work. The finished jack-o-lanterns came out pretty cute, I think. One was designed by Jalen to resemble a black puffle, the other was designed by Jordan to be an alien from Toy Story. Goat Boy * Kit Smitten

I used family day – the kit by Polka Dot Pixels to document my little goat boy. We visit a neighborhood park that has a large climbing rock and he loves to climb up and jump off. We call it goat rock and he is our little goat boy. Smile My favorite pieces in this kit are the frames, the square stitches and the stripey patterned papers.

I can’t believe it’s November. NOVEMBER! It was just september wasn’t it?  We had a great Halloween, all of us in our wizard wear, and we got a lot of cute, oh look, it’s the Harry Potter Family comments.  Dressing up is so much fun!  I had a thought that we should institute a all celebrations should be dress up events… but then we don’t really throw parties in our family.  Maybe I should change that too. ha. we had so much fun.  I am not happy with the rushed pictures we got on Halloween Night, so you know, I’ll be dragging the costumes out for more,  hopefully better picture taking later.  Our pumpkins were fun. Troy’s is the one on the left, mine is the polka dot one (of course) and Jalen’s is on the right.  Jordan’s is sitting up just out of frame, a clone trooper.

Last week I was knocked down in our wintery Hawaii weather, aka rainy, and my throat decided to get mutinous on me.  No fever, so I just held out and tried not to complain too much. (ha, as if) I did have to battle a little woe is me I want to cry like a baby for a little bit, but gave it some thought and figured I know people who are dealing with more than a sore throat out there. perspective is a good thing.

We are lucky enough to have twice a week trash pick up in our neighborhood and last week the city people dropped off recycling bins and information on our new schedule.  Since our housing area has a yard service that takes care of our green waste, we are only adding recyclable bins to our schedule. (i know you are fascinated, aren’t you.  on the edge of your seat? ;) )  I loved the look of these brand new cans lining the street.

so every other week they will pick up our #1,#2 plastics, glass, aluminum cans, corrugated cardboard and newspaper (minus glossy inserts) in these blue bins. I was very excited to drop two pieces of plastic in our bin this week.  We don’t subscribe to the newspaper, we read our news online or watch TV… but we do get the twice a week local interest type paper along with a Hawaii Military Newspaper once a week that will find their way to our blue bin.  I find it strange that they ask us not to bundle, bind, or bag our materials, just to throw them all mixed in the bin…but whatever.  We will still be carrying our HI-5 deposit bottles to the recycling center to get our $1.15 or whatever back.

Jordan’s class took a field trip to the firehouse and Troy and I were lucky enough to go as chaperones.  It was a fun trip. Hey, it was hot. and humid. but fun, fun.  Are you surprised to hear, my child went up to the front row and engaged the firefighter giving the presentation? Yeah, me neither. ha.

It was super cool that they set up a little hose for the kids to spray a cone and knock it over. Jordan about jumped on the nozzle to get it going, it was so funny.

One of Jordan’s friends at school has a Dad who is in the army and just returned home last week from deployment. I was so excited to see him home (he probably thought I was nuts) I was saying welcome home and we’re so glad to see you home… when he brought his son to school.  This week Wednesday is Veteran’s day.  I am going to celebrate it by making cards for Operation Write home.  There are so many family members that would love to get cards from their deployed service members, I want to be  a part of it.  check it out here.  I’ll also be participating in a blog hop on Nov 14.
