I am hosting a challenge over at Design House Digital this month. I am drawn to items in rows and can’t stop taking pictures of them! My challenge for you is to find something in rows and capture it in a photograph. You can look at architecture: columns, windows, houses, buildings, doors… in Nature: trees, rocks… in your neighborhood: fence posts, trees, bikes, light poles… in your home: shoes, cups, toys, clothes… really, who knows? What ever catches your fancy that appears in rows, capture it to share with us!

here are just a few of my examples…

journaling: We stopped in old Hilo Town to check out the cool stores on the waterfront. We were immediately drawn to the red doors of the Sugar Coast Candy Store. Inside, the burlap covered trashcans and black and white checkered floors welcomed us. The old fashioned specialty candies were hard to resist and we left with smiles on our faces and sugar in our bags.

When I first did this layout, I made a typo and had to go back to my layered file and correct the mistake. Then I started thinking, if I turned the template on it’s side, I could show more of this awesome shot… so I did. Here is version 2. which do you like better?

Friday we joined up with 3 lovely high school classmates that I haven’t seen since high school. We met at the Makapu’u Lighthouse trail and walked a beautiful paved uphill route. I am not sure exactly how long it was, but it was a good workout and I am quite thrilled the boys were able to make it without any major complaints. We stopped along the way to sip our water and catch our breath and it was a great activity.

Here is a picture I snapped of Jordan along the way:

and of my three boys :) (you can see makapu’u lighthouse in the background)

When we got to the lookout spot there was a class up there…. One of the girls in our group knew one of the teachers and I knew one of the students from church and the other teacher is a friend of a friend of ours so i thought it was funny :) also it was very convenient because they snapped this shot of all of us. Jordan did not want to be in this picture. I will remember to wear a hat the next time! My friends Leigh, Marna, Kau’i, Troy, Jalen and Marna’s little cutie!

looking down from the lookout, isn’t it beautiful?! I love that aqua color in the tidepools and the shallow areas.

But aren’t we all? Troy has ended his leave and is now back at work. The boys and I are doing our homeschool activities while doing family things as well. Since Troy has been home, he’s fixed the lawn mower, mowed the lawn, hung some art holders, put together a shelf (that has been sitting for about a year in our room), sorted out clothes for donation, took the boys for haircuts, washed my van, washed dishes, folded laundry, made dentist and doctor appointments, taken out the trash, flattened cardboard boxes for our recycling bin, and has been all around pretty darned helpful and considerate. I am so thankful. I know sometimes some blogs tend to be all sunshine and rainbows but I have to say I am so thankful he has been able to step in and do these things for us. I had been looking at that shelf in the box and it was like I could hear it taunting me…. are you going to put me together? are you going to put me together? and sadly I’d sigh, maybe later. Our life is not perfect, we have our share of short tempered impatience that we are working on, but I try to focus on the positive. (what you think about you bring about)

I got the disc of pictures from Tess Monday and I am so in love with these pictures! I can’t wait to get prints hanging on the wall and scrapped too. Thank you thank you thank you to both Tess and Operation Love. These are a few of my favorite shots:

I recently received the two latest kits from Jess at vol.25 Eye Candy Overlays and she’s gearing up for the Holiday season! I created one layout for each new kit.

Thurston Lava Tube

journaling: one of the best parts about staying inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at Kilauea Military Camp is getting a jump start on the day. We were mostly alone while we walked around the Thurston Lava Tube. It was quiet and beautiful. We were able to catch this shot with our timer on the camera.

vol.25: Very Merrier overlay set ; peppermintcreative.com: Textured Cardstock – Color Set 1 Curled Frames Tiny Tag Alphabet; creaturecomfortblog.com: tape strip.

journaling: jalen’s tenth birthday was celebrated with dad’s homecoming. we bought lei, hung signs and went down to the pier. we also went out to dinner at island burger and came home to open presents. jalen got a microscope, slides, legos and games.

Most of the homecomings I can remember have been in the mid morning. This one had been scheduled for an early-ish morning and then was pushed back into the afternoon. Although it was hot (but really, it’s always hot) I actually appreciated this afternoon homecoming- we had time to get out and get things done!

first stop, pick up lei from Lita’s Lei shop.

I got a little Puakenikeni Lei for myself. I love these flowers, they are so sweet smelling!

and since we were down in Chinatown, we headed around the corner to Char Hung Sut for Manapua (Char Siu Bao). This is our favorite place- closed on Tuesdays.

Jordan enjoying his second manapua.

later down at the pier, trying not to get heat stroke… here I am in Jalen’s glasses. and you can see Tess in the brown behind me :)

sigh, our ten year old cutie!

Since we are a family of J’s (Joscie, Jalen, Jordan) the boys added a J to Daddy so Troy wouldn’t feel left out. Welcome home JDaddy!

I drew and colored this sign for Jordan :)

I love the closeness of their two faces. The contentment on Jordan’s face. my heart is happy.

a shot of the ship. excuse me mr. white uniform, you’re in my shot, could you move over a bit? (clouds from eyecandyoverlays)

the ship and the lei :)

We are so thrilled to have Troy back home with us. I mean really! Sometimes transition can be difficult, but with an intention to be considerate things go so well. We were so lucky to have my friend Tess shoot our homecoming as a part of Operation Love and I can’t wait to get the disk of pictures so I can scrap them, share them here and order a print or two :)

Thanks for stopping by, Love Love and Blog you Later!

Jalen has been wanting a microscope for quite some time so for this year’s birthday present we ordered a microscope, a set of professionally mounted slides and some plain slides and cover slips. He was so excited when he opened it! :) Troy and Jalen put the pieces together on Saturday and checked out some of the slides.

Granny and Pop also ordered some Lego for Jalen (and Jordan). Most of the day Saturday was spent putting together Lego sets.

Jordan even got in on the action! I don’t remember getting presents on my brother’s birthday, did you?

I have been so busy since we got back from vacation, catching up on projects, cleaning up and cooking again. It’s hard after 4 or 5 days of eating out every meal to get back into the groove of getting groceries and cooking. It sure feels good though to eat fresh food again!

I’ll be back again soon with more vacation pictures and projects!

This is our first year of homeschooling and we are very excited to be choosing the items we want to work with. While browsing the Pioneer Woman’s homeschool section of her blog, I saw a link to a product on Timberdoodle.com. I checked it out and ordered quite a few items for this year. While there, I also applied to be a blog reviewer. When offered the opportunity to review the Simply Draw book/DVD packet I was more than happy to accept. Jalen’s lack of confidence in his drawing abilities was something I really wanted to help him with.

we received:

included in box:

unbound book – When the product arrived, I was surprised to see it was an unbound book (even though it says it clearly in the description, I obviously was running low on coffee when I read that portion).

DVD -instruction videos for watching via computer and pdf files of practice sheets.

items I bought to go with this product:

3 ring binder

drawing pencils

kneaded eraser

cardstock

items I had on hand:

fine tipped pen

computer

printer (to print extra practice pages)

iTouch/iTunes

This program breaks down the process of drawing into simple tasks. The first task was drawing short parallel lines. Jalen practiced with a pencil first and did pretty well but did much better when I gave him a pen to work with. The videos were straightforward and loaded automatically to my iTunes library and we could watch via iTouch as well. Here is Jalen’s first practice sheet:

as you move through the lessons, each one builds on the last. Jalen’s work is the cup on the bottom where he is copying the one on top. I was really impressed with his work and he was thrilled that he was able to draw.

I like this product for teaching drawing. It is an easy and effective tool.

here are a few links if you are interested in homeschool supplies or curriculum, homeschool art supplies, orSimply Draw.

disclosure: we received a free copy of this product in exchange for an honest review.

If you have any questions, I’d love to hear them! Thanks for stopping by!
