Those who follow me on twitter or are my friends on Facebook might have seen my posts about preparing for a windstorm and possible power outtage last week. The last island wide power outtage came on the day after Christmas and lasted for over 12 hours in my area. I declared at that time that before the next outtage I would have… certain items ready. We had been hearing all week about the storm headed our way that was expected to hit on Thursday. I already have many storm items ready, after all we do live in a tropical area that is susceptible to hurricanes, so we already have a “storm kit” but there were a few things I wanted to add. We have a gas grill, so I could cook on it if I needed to, but it is on the back lanai and I would have to pull it out onto the grass to use it, and if it were raining, that would not be a good scene. So first item on my list was a camp stove.

camp stove, check.
Next new flashlights to replace candles to avoid fire!

flashlights, check.
teakettle to boil water for french press coffee and cup o noodles…

teakettle, check.
battery backup for cellphone/mobile devices…

backup, check.
we also picked up extra batteries to power flashlights, the battery powered radio, the radio speaker… charged up all the camera batteries and everything else that could be charged. Schools announced on Thursday that they would be closed on Friday. I was so relieved that I wouldn’t have to feel guilty about keeping the boys home from school. Some complained about the storm that never was, or how the storm was over hyped. I just don’t understand the criticism over erring on the side of caution? I guess the same folks get mad when they ride in a car and wore their seatbelt for no reason because they didn’t crash? anyway. We are thankful we were spared a windstorm and will be prepared again for the next time!
I stopped off at a local park this morning after dropping the boys off at school to snap a few shots. It really was a beautiful scene, the sun rising and the blue sky. It would have been perfect if my boys were there to be in the pictures, but I’ll settle for this.

I’m off to do some busy work today, and I’ll be back to blog you later! I hope you’re all having a great day! :)
Love Love, Joscie, rhymes with bossy!

I’m with ya on the “Be Prepared” front, but for us, it more like, make sure your car is fully gassed up to leave town!! Glad ya’ll were spared!
I am ALL about being prepared!!! The weather here is never that bad and I have everything I think I could possibly need in an emergency…
Glad you are OK!!
I agree, it’s better to be prepared. Glad you’re OK.
We are always over prepared for storms here too (what with hurricane season and all). The last storm we had was a tropical storm and yes it was hyped up, but there are STILL people who don’t do anything to prepare for it. Kudos to you for preparing :)
Oh boy I am so glad you guys are OK! I LOVE all your photographs…they are so creative!
I’m impressed with your preparedness kit! Where did you get the battery backup for cell phones? Thats a GREAT idea! I also loved the camp stove! (actually I loved all of them but those two were my faves!)
Hey Steph, the battery back up for the cell phone/mobile devices is by Kensington. I got mine at the Navy Exchange.
Some cool shots you got there… man I am tired of everything being white! White sky, white ground… is it spring yet? Of course you live in paradise…. so not fair. ;)
Hey Joscie! I absolutely agree with you about those people that complain about the storm that never came. I am THANKFUL that it didn’t come. Who needs it! I think the officials made the right decision in the best interest of everyone’s safety. I still need to get me a camp stove. Thanks Joscie!
